Scaling the Intelligence Team

3 min read

Intelligence teams scale through specialization, not duplication. The first analyst is a generalist — collecting, analyzing, drafting, reviewing, and delivering everything. The second analyst enables specialization: one focuses on collection and analysis, the other on drafting and delivery. At three analysts, full specialization is possible: collection specialist, analysis specialist, and production specialist. Each specialist develops deeper expertise in their stage, producing higher quality at greater volume than three generalists would achieve.

  1. Solo Analyst (1 person) Owns the full workflow. Capacity: 2-3 recurring products. Focus: establish the product catalog, build the templates, prove the value. The solo phase is about proving the function, not scaling it.
  2. Duo Specialization (2 people) Split by workflow stage: upstream (collection + analysis) and downstream (production + delivery). Capacity: 4-6 recurring products. Focus: standardize workflows, build automation for the highest-volume stages.
  3. Team Specialization (3+ people) Full stage specialization with clear handoff interfaces. Capacity: 6-10 recurring products. Focus: quality at scale, automation of mechanical stages, analyst time focused on interpretation.
