Board Competitive Landscape Summary

3 min read

The board competitive landscape summary is a one-to-two page overview of the competitive environment, delivered quarterly as part of the board package. It contains: top-level market position (where we stand), significant competitive movements since last board meeting (what changed), strategic risk register updates (what threats evolved), and recommended strategic adjustments (what to do). The summary references detailed analysis in the appendix but is self-contained — a board member should understand the competitive landscape after reading two pages without opening the appendix.

Do This

  • Lead with position change — did we gain or lose ground? By how much?
  • Limit to 3-5 significant competitive movements — the board does not need every finding, just the strategic ones
  • Connect every movement to a recommended response — even if the response is "continue monitoring"
  • Include one visual — a competitive position map or trend chart that communicates the landscape in a glance

Avoid This

  • List every competitive event from the quarter — that is a log, not a summary
  • Present competitive data without strategic interpretation — raw data is for analysts, not boards
  • Change the format every quarter — consistency builds readability and reduces the board's cognitive load
