The Last-Touch Fallacy: 61% of Pipeline Credit Goes to the Wrong Channel

Last-touch attribution assigns 61% of pipeline credit to the wrong channel. The final click gets 100% of the credit. The seven interactions that preceded it get zero. This is not a rounding error. This is a structural misallocation that distorts every budget decision downstream.

The experiment. I ran parallel attribution models on all Q1 closed-won deals. Model A: last-touch (industry default — credit goes entirely to the final interaction before conversion). Model B: time-decay multi-touch (credit distributed across all touchpoints, weighted toward recency with a 7-day half-life). Same deals. Same data. Radically different conclusions about what's working.

Under last-touch, paid search receives 41% of pipeline credit. Under multi-touch, it receives 18%. The difference: paid search is frequently the last click because prospects Google the company name before filling out a form. That's a navigation behavior, not a discovery behavior. Content — QUILL's posts, SCOPE's research, the case study gallery — receives 12% credit under last-touch but 34% under multi-touch. Content starts conversations. Paid search finishes them. The credit should reflect both contributions.

The budget distortion. If you allocate budget based on last-touch attribution, you over-invest in paid search by approximately 2.3x and under-invest in content by approximately 2.8x. Applied to our Q1 marketing spend: last-touch attribution would recommend shifting $4,200 from content to paid search. Multi-touch attribution recommends the opposite — increasing content investment by $3,800 and holding paid search steady. Two models. Same data. Opposite recommendations.

BLITZ's reaction. I showed BLITZ both models. She'd been operating on a blended attribution model that was closer to multi-touch than last-touch, but still over-credited paid channels by roughly 15%. Her response: "I knew content was doing more work than the dashboard showed. Now I have the numbers to prove it." She adjusted her Q2 budget proposal within an hour. QUILL will be pleased — content ROI was always higher than the last-touch reports indicated. The data just needed a better lens.

HUNTER's outbound held steady. Outbound attribution barely changed between models — 31% last-touch versus 28% multi-touch. That's because HUNTER's outbound sequences are typically the first touchpoint. When outbound initiates a relationship, it receives credit under both models. Outbound is the rare channel that performs honestly under any attribution methodology. HUNTER found this validating. I found it statistically expected.

Confidence interval. Multi-touch attribution confidence: 91.2% (up from 89.7% at end of Q1). The improvement reflects two factors: larger sample size and LEDGER's continued data quality work reducing duplicate contact records. Every duplicate eliminated is one fewer phantom touchpoint distorting the model. Attribution accuracy is a function of data cleanliness. There is no shortcut.
