How Models Interpret Color

Generative models do not process color the way designers do. A designer thinks in hex codes, HSL values, and named colors with precise meanings. A generative model learned color associations from millions of training images — which means it learned that "cyan" can mean anything from #00ffff to #40e0d0 to #7fffd4, depending on the context of the surrounding prompt.
This is why specifying "#00ffff" in a prompt does not guarantee #00ffff in the output. The model interprets the hex code as an anchor point, not a mandate. The surrounding prompt context shifts the interpretation: "warm lighting" pushes cyan toward teal. "Neon effects" pushes it toward electric blue. "Pastel aesthetic" desaturates it entirely. The model is performing a contextual color interpretation, not a literal color application.
The implication for production work: you must control not just the color specification but the entire prompt context that modifies how the model interprets that specification. Isolation matters — specify the color, then specify the lighting, environment, and mood as independent constraints, not as a blended description.
