Typography in AI-Generated Images

4 min read

Text in AI-generated images has been the technology's most visible weakness — and its most rapid area of improvement. Early diffusion models produced gibberish that looked like text from a fever dream. Current models from Ideogram, Flux, and DALL-E 3 can render clean, readable text in most cases. But "most cases" is not "all cases," and for brand work, you need reliability, not probability. Understanding where text generation works, where it fails, and when to use post-production instead is a core brand system skill.

The current state of AI text rendering follows a clear hierarchy. Short text — one to four words — renders reliably across most modern models. Medium text — five to ten words — works but requires verification for spelling and kerning. Long text — full sentences or paragraphs — remains unreliable and should almost always be added in post-production. The sweet spot for AI text generation is headlines, labels, and short callouts. Anything longer is a gamble.

Do This

  • Use AI text generation for headlines, labels, and short callouts (1-4 words)
  • Specify the exact text in quotation marks within your prompt
  • Verify every character in generated text — AI models commonly swap, duplicate, or omit letters
  • Add longer text in post-production using your actual brand fonts

Avoid This

  • Trust AI to render sentences or paragraphs without error
  • Assume correct spelling because the preview looks right at thumbnail size
  • Use AI-generated text for legal copy, contact information, or any text where accuracy is critical
  • Ship text-heavy assets without character-by-character verification

For brand systems, the practical approach is a hybrid workflow. Let AI generate the visual composition with placeholder text areas, then overlay your actual brand typography in post-production. This gives you the speed of AI generation for the visual design while maintaining pixel-perfect control over every letterform. The composition tells the AI where text lives. Your design tools ensure the text is correct.
