The Generative Motion Landscape

AI animation has matured from "interesting experiment" to "production-viable tool" — with significant caveats. The current generation of video models (Sora, Runway Gen-3, Pika, Kling) can generate 4-15 second clips with reasonable temporal consistency. Longer sequences degrade: character identity drifts, physics becomes unreliable, and the model "forgets" the visual rules established in the first frames.
For production motion graphics — the kind that brand-focused teams produce daily (animated logos, data visualization transitions, UI micro-interactions, social video content) — the sweet spot is hybrid: AI generates the complex visual elements (particles, organic motion, ambient effects), and traditional motion tools (CSS animations, Framer Motion, After Effects) handle the precise, timing-critical elements (text reveals, chart animations, UI transitions).
The division follows a simple rule: if the motion must hit exact timing marks (a logo reveal that syncs with audio at frame 47), use traditional tools. If the motion is ambient, organic, or atmospheric (a background particle field, a flowing gradient, a generative texture loop), AI excels. The hybrid approach produces motion that looks AI-premium while maintaining frame-accurate precision where it matters.
