The Quarterly Ecosystem Brief

3 min read

The quarterly ecosystem brief is a 2-page summary designed for the board package. Page 1: the strategic narrative (2-3 themes, framed in business terms, with quantified impact estimates). Page 2: the ecosystem risk register update (top 5 risks with probability, impact, and recommended responses) and the horizon watch (2-3 developing situations that may appear in next quarter's brief). This format is compact enough for a board that reviews dozens of pages per meeting and comprehensive enough to provide genuine strategic value.

Do This

  • Keep to exactly 2 pages — board packages are thick and your section competes for attention with every other section
  • Lead with the single most important strategic theme — board members who read only the first paragraph should get the key message
  • Include one visualization — an ecosystem map, a trend chart, or a risk matrix that communicates the landscape at a glance

Avoid This

  • Exceed 2 pages — additional detail belongs in an appendix that board members can optionally reference
  • Change the format every quarter — consistency reduces the board's cognitive load and lets them focus on content rather than navigation
  • Include technical jargon — every term should be understandable by a board member from any industry background

The quarterly ecosystem brief should be reviewed by the CEO or CTO before inclusion in the board package. This executive review serves two purposes: it ensures the framing aligns with other board materials, and it gives the executive sponsor an opportunity to add context that the intelligence analyst may not have. The executive sponsor becomes an advocate for the intelligence function in the board room — they understand the value because they reviewed the work.
