The First Sentence
3 min read
The first sentence of a one-pager is the entire argument in compressed form. A busy executive who reads only the first sentence should know what you are recommending and why. Every subsequent sentence supports this sentence. If the first sentence fails, the rest of the document does not matter.
The test for a first sentence is simple: read it in isolation. Does it tell you what is being recommended? Does it tell you why? Does it tell you for whom? If any of those answers is no, the sentence is incomplete.
Common first sentence failures: 'This document outlines our analysis of AI automation opportunities in the claims processing function.' That is a description of the document, not the recommendation. 'We have been evaluating AI options for the past six months and are ready to present our findings.' That is a timeline, not a recommendation. 'AI automation could significantly improve our claims processing efficiency.' That is speculation with a qualification, not a recommendation.
A working first sentence: 'Deploying AI automation in claims processing reduces annual processing costs by $2.1M and returns the investment in 14 months — we recommend approving the Q2 deployment at $1.85M total.' That sentence contains the recommendation, the financial case, the payback period, and the ask. It is one sentence. The executive who reads nothing else knows what they are being asked to decide.

- "Competitor deployments in Q2 have opened a $2.4M annual cost gap — this brief recommends closing it through AI automation"
Avoid This
- "This document summarizes our AI automation analysis and provides recommendations for leadership consideration"
- "Following an extensive evaluation process, we are pleased to present the findings of our AI feasibility study"
- "AI presents a significant opportunity to improve our operations across multiple dimensions"
