Visual Hierarchy in Data Slides

3 min read

The visual hierarchy determines what the audience sees first, second, and third. In a well-designed data slide: first, the headline — the insight stated as a sentence. Second, the chart — the visual evidence that supports the headline. Third, the annotation — the specific data point or trend that the audience should focus on. Fourth, the source and methodology note — small, bottom-right, available for scrutiny but not competing for attention. This hierarchy is achieved through size, position, color, and contrast. The headline is the largest text. The chart occupies the center. The annotation uses a highlight color. The source note is the smallest element. The audience processes the slide in the intended order because the design guides their eye.
