Intelligence Product Assembly

3 min read

The final step in the synthesis pipeline is assembling the synthesized findings into a deliverable intelligence product — a document that serves a specific consumer for a specific purpose. The assembly step is not writing — it is architectural. The findings are already produced. Assembly determines which findings appear, in what order, at what depth, and with what emphasis. The same synthesis can produce an executive alert (one finding, 200 words), a situation brief (all findings, 800 words), or a strategic assessment (all findings with full context, 3000 words). The synthesis is the analytical backbone. The product is the consumer-facing deliverable.

Do This

  • Select findings for the product based on the consumer's decision context, not on the analyst's assessment of what is interesting
  • Order findings by actionability for operational products and by strategic impact for assessment products
  • Include the synthesis provenance trail — consumer should be able to trace any finding back to the underlying sources
  • Maintain a product catalog — standard product types with standard structures reduce assembly time

Avoid This

  • Include every finding in every product — more is not better, relevance is better
  • Bury the most actionable finding below three paragraphs of context
  • Produce custom formats for every delivery — standardize the product types and customize the content

The signal is always there. Most people are just listening to noise.
