Pipeline Maturity Model
4 min read
Pipeline maturity progresses through four levels. Level 1 — Manual with Tooling: the analyst uses tools (AI prompts, spreadsheets, RSS readers) to accelerate manual research. No automation, no scheduled collection. Level 2 — Automated Collection: the collector runs on schedule and stages data automatically. Analysis and synthesis remain manual. Level 3 — Automated Analysis: collection and analysis are automated. Synthesis and delivery retain human-in-the-loop review. Level 4 — Full Pipeline: end-to-end automation with human oversight limited to exception review and strategic direction. Most organizations should target Level 3 as the production standard. Level 4 is appropriate only for routine intelligence products with well-understood domains and proven pipeline reliability.
## Pipeline Maturity Assessment
LEVEL 1: Manual with Tooling
□ AI prompts for research tasks
□ RSS reader for source monitoring
□ Spreadsheet for tracking findings
□ No scheduled collection
Typical output: 5-10 findings per week
LEVEL 2: Automated Collection
□ Scheduled source collection
□ Source registry maintained
□ Data staging with timestamps
□ Manual analysis and synthesis
Typical output: 20-50 findings per week
LEVEL 3: Automated Analysis (TARGET)
□ Automated credibility scoring
□ Automated contradiction detection
□ AI-assisted synthesis drafts
□ Human review before delivery
Typical output: 50-200 findings per week
LEVEL 4: Full Pipeline
□ End-to-end automation
□ Exception-only human review
□ Automated delivery with urgency classification
□ Self-monitoring with health alerts
Typical output: 200+ findings per week
The system watches. The analyst interprets. The team acts. That is the correct division of labor.
