Building the Velocity Improvement Roadmap
3 min read
The velocity improvement roadmap is a prioritized, time-bound plan for improving pipeline velocity over the next four quarters. It translates velocity diagnostics into specific demand generation initiatives, each targeting a specific variable in a specific segment. The roadmap is the bridge between "we know our constraint" and "here is what we are doing about it."
- Prioritize by Impact Rank potential optimizations by expected velocity impact using the sensitivity model. An initiative that improves mid-market win rate by 5 points (producing $500K in incremental quarterly pipeline) ranks higher than an initiative that adds 10 new enterprise opportunities (producing $200K). Impact, not effort, determines priority.
- Sequence by Dependencies Some optimizations are prerequisites for others. Improving qualification standards (win rate lever) before expanding volume prevents the new volume from being low quality. Building sales intelligence capability (win rate lever) before launching ABM campaigns (volume lever) ensures the ABM meetings convert. Sequence optimizations so each one builds on the previous.
- Set Quarterly Milestones For each optimization, define the quarterly milestone: the specific metric improvement expected by end of quarter. "Improve mid-market win rate from 25% to 30% by end of Q2 through enhanced qualification and sales intelligence." The milestone makes the initiative measurable and creates accountability.
Do This
- Prioritize velocity initiatives by expected pipeline impact using sensitivity analysis
- Sequence initiatives by dependencies so each one builds on the previous
- Set specific, measurable quarterly milestones for each initiative
Avoid This
- Prioritize by what is easiest to implement instead of what produces the most velocity gain
- Launch all initiatives simultaneously and complete none of them
- Set vague improvement goals without specific metrics and timelines
Pipeline velocity is the one number that tells you whether your demand generation engine is working. The equation tells you why. The roadmap tells you how to fix it. Master the math and the pipeline follows.
