ABM-Specific Metrics
3 min read
Standard demand generation metrics do not capture the full picture for ABM. Pipeline created and meetings booked matter, but ABM adds dimensions that outbound does not: account penetration (how many buying committee members are engaged), engagement depth (how deeply contacts are interacting with your content and outreach), and deal acceleration (whether ABM accounts move through the pipeline faster than non-ABM accounts).
- Account Penetration Score For each ABM account, track how many identified buying committee members have been contacted, engaged, and converted to a meeting. A fully penetrated account has engagement from the economic buyer, at least one technical evaluator, and an internal champion. Penetration below 50% of the mapped committee indicates insufficient multi-threading.
- Engagement Velocity Track how quickly engagement escalates across the account. An account that goes from first touch to multi-stakeholder engagement in 30 days is progressing. An account that stays at single-contact engagement after 60 days is stalled. Engagement velocity is the leading indicator of whether an account will convert.
- ABM Lift Measurement Compare ABM accounts against a control group of similar non-ABM accounts. Do ABM accounts have higher win rates? Shorter deal cycles? Larger deal sizes? The lift — the delta between ABM and non-ABM performance — is the business case for the program. If there is no measurable lift, the ABM investment is not producing a return above what standard outbound would achieve.
Do This
- Track account penetration as a percentage of mapped buying committee members engaged
- Measure engagement velocity — time from first touch to multi-stakeholder engagement
- Compare ABM accounts against non-ABM controls to quantify the lift
Avoid This
- Measure ABM only on meetings and pipeline — these miss the multi-stakeholder dimension
- Ignore engagement velocity and assume slow accounts will eventually convert
- Claim ABM success without a control group comparison
