Playbook Effectiveness
3 min read
Does the playbook actually improve outcomes? This is the question that separates a valuable operational tool from organizational busy work. Playbook effectiveness measurement compares outcomes for accounts that followed the playbook against accounts that did not (or that followed it partially). If playbook-adherent accounts have higher retention, faster time-to-value, and more expansion than non-adherent accounts, the playbook is working. If there is no difference, the playbook is theater.
Do This
- Compare retention rates between accounts with high playbook adherence and those with low adherence
- Measure TTFV for accounts that completed all onboarding milestones versus those that skipped some
- Track expansion rates for accounts that received the full value realization playbook versus those that received partial treatment
Avoid This
- Assume the playbook is effective because the team is executing it — execution without outcome measurement is activity without validation
- Attribute all positive outcomes to the playbook — other factors contribute to retention and expansion
- Measure effectiveness only at the portfolio level — some playbook phases may be effective while others are not
