Measuring Context Effectiveness

How do you know if your shared context architecture is working? Three metrics. First: context hit rate. When a team member starts a Claude session, what percentage of the context they need is available in the shared context system versus manually assembled? A hit rate below 70% means the shared context is incomplete. Second: output consistency. When two team members produce the same type of deliverable, how consistent are the terminology, formatting, and factual claims? Inconsistency indicates context divergence. Third: ramp-up time. How long does it take a new team member to produce their first deliverable using the shared context system? If the answer is "same as without the system," the system is not delivering value.

Track these three metrics monthly. Improving hit rate means the knowledge base covers the team's actual needs. Improving consistency means the team is working from a shared source of truth. Improving ramp-up time means the context system is reducing the knowledge barrier for new team members.

  1. 1. Measure Context Hit Rate Survey team members monthly: "What percentage of the context you needed for your last task was available in the shared system?" Track the percentage over time. Target: 80%+.
  2. 2. Audit Output Consistency Compare deliverables of the same type from different team members. Check terminology, formatting, and factual claims. Score consistency on a 1-5 scale. Target: 4+.
  3. 3. Track Ramp-Up Time Measure how long new team members take from onboarding to first independent deliverable. Compare against the pre-system baseline. The context system should cut ramp-up time by at least 30%.
