Resistance Patterns & Responses
3 min read
Resistance to AI rollout follows predictable patterns. The patterns are not random — each one has a root cause and a specific response that addresses the root cause rather than the surface objection. Pattern one: "It will replace my job." Root cause: fear of obsolescence. Response: demonstrate that the tool augments their work (faster, more thorough) rather than replacing it, and show examples of peers who became more valuable by adopting the tool. Pattern two: "My work is too complex for AI." Root cause: professional pride. Response: agree that their expertise is essential, then show how the tool handles the mechanical parts so they can focus on the judgment that requires their expertise.
Pattern three: "We tried AI before and it did not work." Root cause: previous negative experience. Response: acknowledge the failure, diagnose what went wrong (usually inadequate training or wrong use case), and explain what is different this time. Pattern four: "I do not have time to learn a new tool." Root cause: workload pressure. Response: demonstrate a 15-minute workflow that saves 2 hours on a task they do this week.
