Member Activation and Retention

3 min read

Activation is the moment a new member transitions from passive to active. For most communities, if a member does not engage within the first seventy-two hours, they never will. The activation sequence: welcome message within one hour of joining (automated, but personalized with their name and a specific question). Introduction prompt within twenty-four hours (tag them in the new-member thread with a specific question based on their profile). First value delivery within forty-eight hours (invite them to the next event or point them to the single most valuable resource in the community). The sequence is not onboarding — it is activation. The goal is one meaningful interaction in the first seventy-two hours. That single interaction predicts long-term engagement better than any other signal.
