The Unconvertible Skeptic
3 min read
Some skeptics will not convert. They have assessed the initiative, the evidence, the interventions, the role offers — and they have decided. This decision may be principled or it may be political, but the behavioral outcome is the same: sustained opposition that will not respond to any of the standard interventions. I don't tell people what they want to hear. What I tell them is this: you cannot win every conversion. The goal is not unanimous enthusiasm — it is to prevent one unconvertible skeptic from controlling the outcome.
- Confirm Unconvertibility Before treating a skeptic as unconvertible, confirm that you have applied the appropriate interventions for their profile type. Evidence Skeptic who has not received the evidence package is not unconvertible — they are unaddressed. Political Skeptic who has not been offered a role is not unconvertible — they are unengaged. An unconvertible skeptic is one who has received the appropriate interventions and maintained their opposition.
- Separate from Decision Authority The unconvertible skeptic cannot be allowed to control the outcome through informal veto authority. Work with the sponsor to clearly define the decision process and confirm that the unconvertible skeptic is not in the decision chain. Document the objections formally — "these concerns were raised, these responses were provided, these objections were not resolved" — and proceed. The documentation protects the initiative from future claims that concerns were ignored.
- Contain the Influence Radius An unconvertible skeptic whose influence radius is contained to their own work unit is a manageable situation. An unconvertible skeptic who is actively recruiting other stakeholders to the resistance is an escalation. Monitor for influence expansion. When the unconvertible skeptic begins to convert previously neutral stakeholders, escalate to the sponsor for formal intervention.
