The Board Audience

3 min read

Board members are a distinct intelligence consumer profile. They have the broadest strategic perspective but the least operational context. They read dozens of board packages across multiple companies. Their attention budget per topic is measured in minutes, not pages. They evaluate intelligence through a fiduciary lens — does this finding affect shareholder value, strategic risk, or competitive position at the enterprise level? Findings that matter operationally but not strategically do not belong in board materials. Findings that matter strategically but are presented operationally will be overlooked.

The board package intelligence section has a strict hierarchy: strategic implication first, competitive context second, evidence summary third, recommendations fourth. The board member who reads only the first two items should understand the strategic landscape. The board member who reads all four should be prepared to discuss implications and approve recommendations. The full supporting analysis lives in the appendix — available if needed, never required for comprehension.
