Change Champion Networks

3 min read

A change champion network is a distributed group of behaviorally diverse advocates who support the change within their teams. The network works because change adopted through peer influence is more sustainable than change imposed through hierarchy. But most champion networks fail because they are staffed with volunteers rather than designed for behavioral coverage. A champion network of all high-I enthusiasts generates excitement but no rigor. One of all high-D leaders generates momentum but no support. Behavioral diversity in the champion network is as important as behavioral diversity in the team.

Do This

  • Design the champion network for behavioral coverage — include D-champions (fast adoption modeling), I-champions (social evangelism), S-champions (stability assurance), and C-champions (evidence validation)
  • Match champions to adopter segments — the S-champion is most effective supporting other S-profiles through the transition
  • Train champions on behavioral change management — they need dimensional awareness to support their constituents effectively

Avoid This

  • Staff the champion network exclusively with enthusiastic volunteers — enthusiasm selects for I-profiles and creates a behavioral monoculture
  • Assume champions will figure out how to support adoption — provide specific training on supporting each profile type through change
  • Treat the champion network as a communication channel — it is a support network, not a broadcast system
