Trigger Intelligence ROI

4 min read

Trigger intelligence ROI quantifies the business value of detecting and responding to customer world changes. The calculation has three components. Revenue protected: trigger responses that prevented churn or contract reduction. Measure by tracking accounts where a trigger response intervention correlated with retention at renewal — compared to the historical churn rate for accounts experiencing similar trigger events without intervention. Revenue generated: trigger responses that produced new engagement, expansion, or cross-sell revenue. Measure by tracking revenue that originated from a trigger response outreach. Relationship value: trigger responses that deepened the customer relationship as measured by engagement quality metrics — meeting frequency, executive access, stakeholder breadth — even when no immediate revenue resulted.

Do This

  • Track revenue protected separately from revenue generated — retention value and growth value are both important but they are different metrics
  • Attribute conservatively — if three factors contributed to a retained account, attribute one-third of the retention value to trigger intelligence, not the full amount
  • Include relationship value even though it is harder to quantify — a trigger response that opens executive access at a strategic account has value that exceeds the cost of the response even without immediate revenue

Avoid This

  • Claim full revenue attribution for every trigger response — the trigger response contributed to the outcome alongside many other factors
  • Ignore trigger intelligence ROI because "it is hard to measure" — approximate measurement is infinitely better than no measurement, and investment without measurement is faith-based budgeting
  • Measure only revenue generated and ignore revenue protected — in a subscription or recurring-revenue business, retention value often exceeds acquisition value

You know what you do. I'll show you why it matters.
