Why One Agent Isn't Enough

A single AI agent is powerful. It can research, write, code, and analyze. But it has hard limits. The context window is finite — every instruction, every document, every conversation turn competes for the same space. When you ask one agent to research a topic, draft a report, review its own work, and format the final output, each step degrades the quality of the next because the context fills up with intermediate work product.
Beyond context limits, a single agent has no second opinion. It generates output and moves on. There is no reviewer, no critic, no alternative perspective. If the first draft has a subtle error or a weak argument, the same agent that wrote it is unlikely to catch the problem when asked to review it. This is not a flaw in the model — it is a structural limitation of single-agent architecture. The agent's blind spots are consistent.
Do This
- Use a team when a task requires multiple domains of expertise
- Use a team when quality depends on review by a separate perspective
- Use a team when the workload can be split into parallel tracks
- Use a team when context window pressure is degrading output quality
Avoid This
- Do not use a team for simple, focused tasks a single agent handles well
- Do not assume a better prompt will fix structural single-agent limitations
- Do not add agents just because you can — each one adds cost and coordination overhead
